Rob Machado Seaside Quad Finner - Single Tab Finneoppsett: Quad fin/4 finner til quad setup - passer i Futures finbox Konstruksjon: Bamboo Performance: Balanced/all-around The design story of the Seaside Quad began with the Go Fish in around 2016.  I rode the Go Fish with keel fins. I’ve always loved keel fins. And at the time, I had never loved quads. I had never even really ridden quads before 2018.  Sometime in early 2018, I began synthesizing the Go Fish board model into what would become the Seaside board model, and I had a moment where I recognized something that most of us take for granted about quad sets - they’re all derived from the design of a thruster set. For example, you can look at your favorite thruster set and add two quad trailers to it, and the trailers look just like the front two fins but smaller. Quad fins are, just in general, inspired and designed in the spirit of thrusters.  But at the time I was riding a keel fin in my Go Fish, and since I had no history with quad fin sets prior, I began designing a quad fin set for the Seaside that used a twin keel set as a starting point, not a thruster set as a starting point.  What I landed on is a quad set with the same drivey, basey feelings of a keel fin set, designed specifically for the Seaside, but it also works in any quad fin board you put it in. It’s the best of keel fin feelings, distilled into quad form for any quad shape you ride.  Today, this new and updated version of my original quad set was improved to create more of a balanced and all-around performance characteristic across a variety of different surfboard shapes.  The front two fins are slightly more raked back than the original, and the two quad trailers are slightly more upright than the original. I did this to maintain the same carving characteristics of the original quad set, while adding in a new ability to pivot more tightly and immediately than the original quad set.  Overall this gives the new and updated quad set a bigger and better sweet spot, enabling the surfer to position their back foot more freely on the tail, without sacrificing either a drawn out carving ability, or a quick and pivoting ability to slide or slip the fins free when wanted, for a wider variety of maneuvering than the original quad set. The effective area on the front fins of the new Machado Seaside Quad set is moved towards the back of the fins with a little more sweep/rake in the profile in comparison to pervious versions. The front fins have 2 degrees less cant than the previous sets, a slightly fuller foil and are a slightly stiffer than previous versions.  The back fin on the new Machado Seaside Quad have more curve, fuller foil and are slightly stiffer than previous versions.  The weight of the entire set is 15% lighter than previous versions weighing in at 0.6 lbs per set.

A little goes a very long way.     ABOUT FU WAX According to the creator of Fu Wax, Fuad Mansur, there was a distinct lack of surf shops and supplies during his childhood years in 1960s Brazil. This meant that if you wanted to surf, you had to shape your own boards, fasten your own boardshorts, and make your own wax. And Fuad wanted to surf. Like many surfers before them, the Mansur brothers of Fuad, Wady, and Elias started making a paraffin-based wax for their surfboards at home. After several years of tinkering in their grandparents’ garage, the boys realized that their paraffin solution was too slippery and ultimately dangerous to apply. Then in the early ‘70s, Fuad, whose obsession with surfing made him determined to create a superior surf wax, decided to consult a chemist about the situation. After much contemplation, the chemist told Fuad about a secret material he should try in the construction of the paraffin base. After 20 years of failed wax research and with no other form of employment, by 1987 Fuad had blown through his father’s inheritance, largely on the childhood fantasy of creating a perfect surf wax. Then, with Fu Wax on the brink of bankruptcy, there was an accident in the lab. A raw material melted before its expected tipping point, leading to a premature liquification that would severely alter their wax solution. This accident, by some infinitesimal chance, produced a paraffin that was ideal for surfboards. FU WAX was born. After a successful beta-run in Brazil, the Mansur brothers decided to put this solution through the ultimate wax test – a surf in the freezing waters of Patagonia. They traveled 1,600 miles with just three 80-gram bars of the new, accidental solution. On his first wave, Fuad felt a sense of grip and security he’d never experienced before. Entranced by the sensation, he surfed until well past dark, eventually collapsing with hypothermia and being hospitalized for two days. During his time in the infirmary, Fuad developed a slogan for his new creation: Tack Taken Seriously. The new Fu Wax was a 10/10.

Rob Machado Twin Keel Finner - Single Tab Finneoppsett: Twin Keel fins/2 finner til twin setup - passer i Futures finbox   The first set of keels I rode were on a Skip Frye fish around the time we were filming Seedling - they were hand foiled Larry Gephart fins that I think were referred to as 'straight backs'. Basically, they looked like plywood that someone cut out and foiled; they were beautiful. And that's what originally sparked my imagination as far as fishes and keels go.  I got into experimenting with variety of fish shapes shortly after and that was when my approach towards keel fins really started. My focus today is on having a blend of performance interwoven into the traditional feelings of a keel fin set. For example, I've moved away from super wide bases and towards more curve in the trailing edge. Overall, my goal with this new fin set today was to find something that gives you all the positive sensations of having a traditional keel, but toned down so it isn't so trackey and drivey - I wanted something that would loosen up and liven up in the pocket when you want them to.  What I love most about this new fin set is the way it holds a line and feels locked into speed sections, but it also pivots off of a track and livens up in the pocket when you want to. A lot of this comes from the way I designed the foil.  I designed this new fin with the Too Fish in mind, but also with the intent to make something so versatile that it can work in any twin fin shape you like. To be honest I've been riding them in the Sunday a lot as well as the Midas, and also in some twin fin step ups I've been experimenting with recently.  The lesson I've learned over the past year of developing these fins is that there are more uses for twin fin keels than we think - so get creative. Firewire - Too Fish 5'8 Helium - Machado surfebrett Dimensjoner: 5'8 x 21 9/16 x 2 9/16 - 35.5 Liter Finneoppsett: Twin-fin Futures (finner selges separat) Konstruksjon: Helium Technology Farge: Hvit   An evolution of Rob's popular "Go Fish' model from 2017, updated with lessons he learned from the Seaside, this all new Too Fish model is built in Firewire Surfboards Helium Technology for light and lively response underfoot with significant durability improvements above other surfboard building methods given the use of aerospace deck skins on the top and bottom of the board, as well as a rail comprised of paulownia and balsa wood for controlled flex and rebound in turns. Rob says that the Too Fish is : "My favorite in small and weak waves because of how thick and floaty it is in the forward two thirds of the board, but this shape is also thinned out aggressively in the tail to enable hold in powerful waves. I've ridden the Too Fish in everything from overhead waves on the North Shore to perfect days on the reef at home, and also the weakest most disorganized junk surf at the beach break in front of my house. This is my favorite board for all conditions." The resurrection of the Original GO FISH but with a new bottom designed for speed and function. I have removed the channel from the bottom and created a smoother flow of water throughout the tail while still encompassing the original design with some vee off the tips of the tail.  Performance advantages It is extremely fast and is very trustworthy in steep surf. It likes the pocket a lot more and has much more bite in it than a Seaside.  Works great at your true shortboard liters, largely due the wider tail. It also paddles a little better than the Seaside.   In sizing up (2-4L above your ‘normal’), it may be the best board in our offering. The sweet spot is bigger and less critical, you can surf forward on it easily, it generates great speed down the line, but with great control and the rail still engages well. It was found to be more trustworthy in steeper sections that the Seaside and is an ideal board (rivaling/ even beating out the Sweet Potato, SUN and SAB) for a board with glide that has more performance.    In comparison to  Go Fish - It’s a lot quicker in the pocket compared to the Go Fish.  Doesn’t hold a rail quite as well as the Go Fish, but definitely much more maneuverable in the pocket. Seaside – Rides VERY different to the Seaside. The rails bury into the water further and allow a tighter turn.  It’s also easier to change direction back to the open face after a little down carve or cut back.  The Too Fish pivots more like a shortboard. The seaside pivots more like an 80’s shortboard.  A little more above the water and you need to wash the speed a bit for it to roll to the rail. The two side panels run down each rail on either side of the center panel, and transition from concave to flat to Vee while maintaining the deep single concave down the middle. The overall effect of these design parameters, when combined with a keel fin set up, is a highly maneuverable and speedy board with tons of drive and takes the retro fish to a whole new performance level.
