And Fuad wanted to surf. Like many surfers before them, the Mansur brothers of Fuad, Wady, and Elias started making a paraffin-based wax for their surfboards at home. After several years of tinkering in their grandparents’ garage, the boys realized that their paraffin solution was too slippery and ultimately dangerous to apply. Then in the early ‘70s, Fuad, whose obsession with surfing made him determined to create a superior surf wax, decided to consult a chemist about the situation. After much contemplation, the chemist told Fuad about a secret material he should try in the construction of the paraffin base. After 20 years of failed wax research and with no other form of employment, by 1987 Fuad had blown through his father’s inheritance, largely on the childhood fantasy of creating a perfect surf wax. Then, with Fu Wax on the brink of bankruptcy, there was an accident in the lab. A raw material melted before its expected tipping point, leading to a premature liquification that would severely alter their wax solution. This accident, by some infinitesimal chance, produced a paraffin that was ideal for surfboards. FU WAX was born.   After a successful beta-run in Brazil, the Mansur brothers decided to put this solution through the ultimate wax test – a surf in the freezing waters of Patagonia. They traveled 1,600 miles with just three 80-gram bars of the new, accidental solution. On his first wave, Fuad felt a sense of grip and security he’d never experienced before. Entranced by the sensation, he surfed until well past dark, eventually collapsing with hypothermia and being hospitalized for two days. During his time in the infirmary, Fuad developed a slogan for his new creation: Tack Taken Seriously. The new Fu Wax was a 10/10.

Designed by Dan Mann in partnership with Kelly Slater and Kevin Schulz, this utility midlength is the most well-rounded and versatile shape in the Slater Designs range, crafted to cruise across weak wave faces and grind through cavernous overhead tubes. The Boss Up is the board you would travel with if you could only bring one board with you. Your one board quiver with maximum performance in a purely versatile package. Recommended to ride roughly +13 liters more volume than your standard shortboard, paired with the KS1 5 Fin Template configured as a Quad. This board manifested itself into existence as a blindingly obvious next step for the SBoss. After riding the SBoss for about 18 months I realized how perfectly all the same outstanding design features of the SBoss would translate into a performance midlength. The dna of a midlength that fits into the Slater Design world would need to stand out in its look and be outstanding in its performance, paddling and diversity. Rob Machado Seaside Quad Finner - Single Tab Finneoppsett: Quad fin/4 finner til quad setup - passer i Futures finbox Konstruksjon: Bamboo Performance: Balanced/all-around The design story of the Seaside Quad began with the Go Fish in around 2016.  I rode the Go Fish with keel fins. I’ve always loved keel fins. And at the time, I had never loved quads. I had never even really ridden quads before 2018.  Sometime in early 2018, I began synthesizing the Go Fish board model into what would become the Seaside board model, and I had a moment where I recognized something that most of us take for granted about quad sets - they’re all derived from the design of a thruster set. For example, you can look at your favorite thruster set and add two quad trailers to it, and the trailers look just like the front two fins but smaller. Quad fins are, just in general, inspired and designed in the spirit of thrusters.  But at the time I was riding a keel fin in my Go Fish, and since I had no history with quad fin sets prior, I began designing a quad fin set for the Seaside that used a twin keel set as a starting point, not a thruster set as a starting point.  What I landed on is a quad set with the same drivey, basey feelings of a keel fin set, designed specifically for the Seaside, but it also works in any quad fin board you put it in. It’s the best of keel fin feelings, distilled into quad form for any quad shape you ride.  Today, this new and updated version of my original quad set was improved to create more of a balanced and all-around performance characteristic across a variety of different surfboard shapes.  The front two fins are slightly more raked back than the original, and the two quad trailers are slightly more upright than the original. I did this to maintain the same carving characteristics of the original quad set, while adding in a new ability to pivot more tightly and immediately than the original quad set.  Overall this gives the new and updated quad set a bigger and better sweet spot, enabling the surfer to position their back foot more freely on the tail, without sacrificing either a drawn out carving ability, or a quick and pivoting ability to slide or slip the fins free when wanted, for a wider variety of maneuvering than the original quad set. The effective area on the front fins of the new Machado Seaside Quad set is moved towards the back of the fins with a little more sweep/rake in the profile in comparison to pervious versions. The front fins have 2 degrees less cant than the previous sets, a slightly fuller foil and are a slightly stiffer than previous versions.  The back fin on the new Machado Seaside Quad have more curve, fuller foil and are slightly stiffer than previous versions.  The weight of the entire set is 15% lighter than previous versions weighing in at 0.6 lbs per set.

This new squash version of the FRK is meant to be ridden slightly shorter than the original FRK round tail. It has all the on-wave benefits of the original FRK with a touch more release through turns that comes from the squash tail and minor adjustments to how the concaves and fin placements relate to the increased surface area of the squash when compared to a round tail. The way the volume would distribute through the width, the whole shape… It might actually be the most intuitive design I’ve ever done, probably because I’ve spent so many years both watching Kelly surf, and shaping boards. As crazy as it sounds I was certain it would work for him. Totally certain. The odd thing is, after sending him the board in 2015, I never heard from Kelly about how the board went, and I sort of just moved on to other stuff.  Then one afternoon in 2017 I got this stream of text messages one day about how Kelly was blowing up at Trestles on my board. It totally caught me off guard. Just text messages and phone calls flying in from everyone. I sorted through everyone’s messages and learned that Kelly’s good friend from Florida who was in town at the time had grabbed the board from Kelly’s shed where it had sat un-surfed for two years.  He surfed it and then told Kelly that Kelly would love it based on having known Kelly his whole life, and having a good idea about what boards he likes and doesn’t like, based on all the times the two of them had swapped boards before.  Anyway, thankfully Kelly took his friends advice and loved the board from the first turn.  Kelly actually said he knew the FRK was a keeper before he’d even completed his first wave on it. Two weeks later he took it to J Bay and did what a lot of people called his best surfing of the year.  Since that contest, he’s ridden the FRK everywhere in videos and at key events like the Founders Cup, J Bay again in 2018, and the Surf Ranch Pro. He’s also surfed it all around the North Shore this Winter.  Actually the FRKs he’s been riding this Winter have been straight out of Firewire’s factory, and I’m stoked we were able to so smoothly transition the custom FRKs I’ve been making him since 17’ into the final version from Firewire’s factory that will be at surf shops everywhere. To see Kelly embrace the shape and build exactly as it will hit surf shops is awesome. Alle disse elementene er laget for ripping, mens Go Fish forblir cruisey og morsom. Seaside er kun quad, hvorfor? Jeg bestemte meg for at hvis jeg først skulle lage en quad, så skulle jeg lage en quad som utelukkende er en quad… og designe concaves og bunnkonturer rundt det. The Dominator has been a staple in my quiver, and the Firewire line, since its inception in 2008. The DM II is meant to be a clean update of the original with design features that allow it to work well in a wider range of conditions and enhance its performance.  The obvious outline change is the tail going to a squash from the round tail. Also, the rails are slightly more refined and performance oriented. The concave is the same under the front foot but splits into a subtle, double-barrel and V out the tail in the last 5”. I normally look for a round tail to provide smoothness in transition from rail to rail and during turns, but the squash tail is proving to not only have that quality as well, but also a bit more release in the turns. Previous Dominator model Designed by Dan Mann, and perhaps the most versatile board in the Firewire quiver to date, the DOMINATOR combines a full outline with a thick foil from nose to tail and a 5/4/3 fin configuration. Dan moved the wide point back to reduce the nose profile, maintaining all of the speed but with none of the top turn drawbacks of retro nose outlines. Built with the flex characteristics and lightweight of Helium Technology, the DOMINATOR paddles like it’s turbo charged and does not track like heavier PU boards with similar dimensions. Dominator har vært en fast del av mitt eget brettutvalg, og en bærebjelke i Firewire-sortimentet, helt siden starten i 2008. DM II er ment å være en ren oppdatering av originalen, med designdetaljer som gjør at den fungerer godt i et bredere spekter av forhold og har enda bedre ytelse. Den mest åpenbare endringen i omrisset er at den har fått en squash-tail i stedet for den runde halen. I tillegg er railene noe mer raffinerte og ytelsesorienterte. Konkaven er den samme under fremfoten, men deler seg i en subtil "double-barrel" og en V ut gjennom de siste 5 tommene av halen. Vanligvis ser jeg etter en round tail for å få myke overganger fra kant til kant og i svinger, men squash-tailen viser seg å ikke bare ha de samme kvalitetene, men gir også litt mer slipp og respons i svingene.   Om den forrige Dominator-modellen Designet av Dan Mann, og kanskje det mest allsidige brettet i Firewire-utvalget til dags dato. DOMINATOR kombinerer et fyldig omriss med mye volum fra nese til hale, og et fleksibelt 5/4/3-finneoppsett. Dan flyttet det bredeste punktet bakover for å redusere profilen på nesen. Dette beholder all farten, men uten de vanlige utfordringene i topp-svinger som man ofte finner på retro-aktige nesepartier. Bygget med de lette materialene og de unike fleksegenskapene til Helium-teknologi, padler DOMINATOR som om den er turboladet, og den føles aldri tung eller treg slik tradisjonelle PU-brett med lignende dimensjoner kan gjøre.
