Surfboard quiver for Norway

Last week Surfshop took three boards over to FriFlyt to show a quiver of boards for different conditions. It´s not the most technical video on specs of rails, bottom concaves, nose rockers etc. It is more a broad overview of the following:

http://friflyt.no/Surf/Brett-til-norske-forhold

An example of a grovel board - Lost V2 Stub

A wider, thicker, shorter, flatter board that performs well in small waves or for a surfer who is not in the water a lot and wants to ride a smaller board which is easy to catch waves and really easy to turn and is super fast.

Examples: Our team rider Phil Pope is 90kg and rides this as a 5’10 20.5 2.44 33.7L on the smallest days. An intermediate surfer at 90kg could have a lot of fun on a 6’2 21.5 2.63 40.4L

An example of short board - Channel Islands Fred Rubble

A board that works well as an all round short board. It goes well in a lot of conditions both small punchy waves and will hold when conditions get bigger, even well over head. The Fred Rubble still has enough width in the nose and tail to paddle well with more refined rails and tail than a groveller. An intermidiate surfer will have a blast on this as long as the volumes are ordered correctly, relative to the surfers wieght and ability.

Examples: Team rider Jonas Paulsen is 82kg and rides the 6´0 x 19 1/8 x 2 3/8 28.6L. Jonas rides this in just about all conditions as he likes the feeling of more refined boards from waste height to the biggest days the East coast produces. Phil prefers to use his 6´1 as a step up for the bigger days.

An intermediate surfer at 82kg could ride the between the 6´1 -31.6L and the 6´4 - 34.6L

An example of a step up - Channel Islands Semi Pro 12

The holy grail for those super hollow days or just big steep take offs and long steep walls. This is Kelly Slaters model with a rounded pin, refined rails and the option to ride it as a quad or a thruster this the ultimate board for the big days.

Examples: I (Seamus) am 75kg and ride the 6´0 x 19 1/8 x 2 3/8 28.6L.

This one is the hardest to recommend sizes as every surfer has different preferences when it comes to boards for bigger waves for advice feel free to shoot through a mail or give us a shout on the phone. An intermediate surfer at 85kg could run the 6´5 x 19 7/8 x 2 5/8 at 34.2L (really broad example)

NB: It should be noted that the recommendations are very general guidelines and for personalised advice we are happy to talk through your specific needs to help you get the right board for the right conditions. With so many choices sometime reading blogs with varied advices on different forums can be more confusing than helpful.

For those of you who are new to the sport it might be eaier to relate buying a surfboard to buying cross country skis, if you get the right advice and are fitted with the right equipment half the battle is done :)

Things we can help you establish and give you advice with:

Your skill level

The right size board and volume needed to float you for varying conditions.

A range of different models that will work best for the conditions you surf in, be it for Norway or on your annual trip to Bali.

Have a great week, it´s going to be pumping everywhere!
